Then & Theory examines the ideas that survive their original moment: political arguments, philosophical traditions, institutions, symbols, technologies, and cultural assumptions that continue to organize the present. The aim is not to turn history into trivia, but to recover the context that makes the present intelligible.
Editorial approach
Stories begin with a question rather than a predetermined conclusion. We work outward through primary sources, scholarship, material culture, and competing interpretations, separating what the record establishes from what remains disputed. The result should leave the reader with more context, not merely a cleaner opinion.
